Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hackathon?

A sprint-like event where participants team up and create solutions to real-life challenges in an intense period of time. Using creativity, technology and mentoring, the week results in prototypes, fresh new concepts and innovation.

What is Hack&Heal about?

Hack&Heal is an online hackathon where we are looking for students, fresh graduates or early stage startups who are willing to solve our partners’ challenges in the area of healthcare during 48 hours.

I have an idea, what do I need to do?

  1. Find your teammates. Or apply solo, and ask to be added to a brand new team if you want. Lone wolves are also welcome.
  2. Register!
  3. Join us on February 19 and start brainstorming.
  4. Work on your solution with your team via Slack.
  5. Feel free to request mentoring on your project from experts.
  6. Submit your project video by 10:00 on February 21
  7. Take home your prize!

How can I submit my project?

To submit your project create a 2 minute video pitch, upload it to YouTube and link it on the submission form, along with a GitHub repo. The video can have you talking, a live app demo (if you have one), some cool animation, etc... whatever fits best. The jury will then evaluate projects based on the pitch and submission form. Please observe these conditions strictly as in other cases we will unfortunately not be able to evaluate your project.

What does the evaluation method look like?

There will be three kinds of evaluation methods. On the one hand, the challenge’s owner will provide a 3-4 member jury of experts from its company who will evaluate the projects based on the pitches and submission forms. And on the other hand, all projects will be available and can be evaluated by other competitors too through the JunctionApp. Finally, for the main prize, each challenge winner and the best 3 ideas according to the community will do a live pitch and with an audience voting we will announce the absolute winner of the contest.

How can the competitors evaluate each other?

JunctionApp uses an algorithm named Gavel to judge projects. In this pairwise-comparison-based algorithm participants review each other’s projects. The system incorporates a lot of research on mathematical psychology along with fancy math, resulting in a fair and scalable reviewing system. The user is always given two projects to compare, asked to vote for the better one and compare the newer project to the next one (and so forth). This way, one doesn’t have to take in consideration what the absolute perfect, nor what the absolutely worst project would look like. It’s enough to decide the better one of the two that the system suggests. In addition, participants are naturally curious to understand why a certain project has won. Peer reviewing gives them the possibility to have an overlook of other projects and cast their vote for the winners.

What are the evaluation criteria?

The proposals will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:

  • 25% - Prototype
  • 20% - Feasibility
  • 20% - Impact/value
  • 20% - Innovativeness
  • 15% - Presentation

Is participation free of charge?

Yes, you can enter the hackathon for free.

What is the official language of the event?

The event’s language is English from start to finish, including the mentorings and the pitch sessions.

It’s not possible to share through the Junction App, so please share the team code between all team members for example by email.

When do I get to know the categories / challenges?

In this hackathon there won't be different categories, teams will need to come up with solutions to challenges given by our partners! Each partner will prepare with one challenge, and we will share them with you a few days before the competition starts. This way everyone has an equal chance, and it helps us keep the hackathon spirit, since participants will have a short amount of time to come up with their ideas! We'll announce these challenges on this website, so stay tuned!

What will the live pitches look like on sunday?

7 teams will do a live pitch (the 4 challenge winner and the top 3 from the community evaluation) on Sunday in a previously decided order. They'll have to make a presentation with basic informations about their solution and pitch it within 5 minutes. During the pitches the audience can ask questions in the chat and if there is an interesting question the MC will ask this from the team. Once the teams have presented their idea, the audience will appr. have half an hour to vote for the team they deem best through JunctionApp.
